When people say "the best team didn't win the superbowl" I think they're wrong, because I define the best team as the superbowl winner. I don't see any other objective way to determine which team is the best. How can you prove which team is the best other than looking to see who won the superbowl?

The winner of the Superbowl is the holder of the Lombardi trophy and is considered the NFL champion. This team is the champion and thus is the best team in the NFL for that time period. Many may argue that except for this dropped pass or this bad call a team would have been the champion. The fact is, the holder of the trophy is the champion.

In any knockout form of competition like all the major US sports, this argument will prevail. It is because an underdog team can have a better than usual game or a better team can have an off day. So, if you like this kind of competition, live with it, and answer the nay-sayers with Look at the scoreboard. If not, go for sport that determines the winner on a season long league competition.

You're right. The only way to prove the best team in football, on that day, is on the field. Otherwise, the pro football system would be in the same mess as the BCS. By the way, the un-defeated Boise State, isn't on the BCS list.
The play off system, currently used by the NFL, is best method to determine who's the best team is in football.
