Bittorrent is a P@P (peer ro peer) protocol for downloading files, especially large ones. The way it works is that it divides a file into chunks, and you download one chunk of that file from another user un the 'swarm'. The swarm is the collective group of all users who are downloading this file.

Once you have downloaded a chunk, some other user can be downloading that chunk from you, while you are downloading a new chunk. This way, one person can seed a large file, and many users can download this file while sharing the bandwidth requirements for that file amongst themselves.

The original bittorrent client is probably the simplest to use, but several others work very well and have more information and features. I use Azureas, and uTorrent, BitPump, are also popular. For getting started I would try the original Bittorrent client, which is available at www.bittorrent.com.

Azureas is available at http://azureus.sourceforge.net/, and you will need Java installed to run it.

BitTorrent is a way of transferring files via peer-2-peer technology, but it works better than other methods. I use Burst!, it's works very well.
