IMO McAfee is a computer bloater, meaning that it uses up too many resources that are needed for your computer to run smoothly.

I have used Zone Alarm in the past and find it to be a fairly good firewall, but it to bloats my computer with unnecessary crap.

I have been using http://www.comodogroup.com/products/free_products.html comodo firewall and have found it to be the best free firewall available

As far as virus protection, I recommend http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

You also need antispyware

As the old saying goes you only get what you pay for. Look at it this way. Zone Alarm offeres a free program. Ask yourself why? McAfee only offers a free scan. If something sounds to good to be true, then it most likely is not. FREE!

McAffee is better than Zone Alarm 100%

I don't really care for neither one of them. As far as firewalls are concerned, if you have Windows XP, then you already have one. It is built into the operating system. To enable it if it is not enabled, click start, control panel, then click windows firewall. Click the checkbox that says on to turn it on then click OK. Microsoft also has a good antivirus program that is free to use and update. It not only scans the system, it will also clean the infected files, quarantine them or delete them, if they can not be cleaned. The web site for this program is http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Both were once the "darlings of the internet" as freeware choices way back when; but have more recently become bloated and buggy in my opinion...

Try Comodo Free Firewall instead

I recommend against McAfee and Norton products, they take over your system and use up a lot of resources, plus they don't work that great either...plus, they are quite expensive. Try this...it's completely free:
AVG bundled with ZoneAlarm
