I've always used the network wizard. It seems to be the simplest way to set it up since it's a step by step process. It'll ask for a computer name and network name and some other stuff. It's pretty straight forward. Once you've done that, you should be able to go into network neighbourhood or network places and see your other computer. If it doesn't work, the problem could be a number of other things.

Better Solution: Share the HARD Drives first and get ALL the folders! My Computer--->select hard drive----->right click PROPERTIES and choose SHARING. do that on BOTH Computers.

Then enable the LAN connection on both systems.

Go into the Control Panel and select System
Then create a Separate SYSTEM ID for EACH computer.

Then enable the network using the wizard.

Doing this will require multiple boots on EACH computer.

You need to make sure your modem is plugged into the WAN port on the router. Then you will have to set both computer to automatically be signed an ip address. Do this in tcp/ip properties. Then make sure the settings are correct in your router by accessing its setup via its private address. most are 192.168.1.1 or 2.2 at the end.. If they are connected fine to the net and you need to just create a workgroup go to my compute properties/system properties. go to computer name and make sure the workgroup is named the same on both machines.. Anything that you want to share so that the other machine can download or modify the files you just right click the file and select share or sharing.. Go to my network places and select add a new network place, go to entire network > microsoft network > and pick other machine to add them to your workgroup.. Do this on both machines..

Go to "My Network Places" on one of the computers and you should see the other computer's shared folders pop up. If there are no shared folders, do this:
Get to a folder you want to share and right click on it, then click on Sharing and Security in the menu that pops up. Make sure that Share This Folder is enabled and click OK.
