I think one thing you fail to realize is that the people that run the Ididarod are closely involved with their dogs, much more than most people and their pets. To them, these dogs are family in a very close way.
They wouldn't be doing things to hurt their dogs.

First of all, it's Iditarod - secondly, the dogs love it - it works them, which is what dogs like. Third, these dogs are made for snow and ice. When they fall through the ice, they are pulled out, and they do not freeze to death - they've been running all day, they're hot, and they just got a nice cool - off. Not only that, like I said, these dogs are built for winter - they have very thick coats.
There's nothing cruel about it. Think of the dogs as professional athletes. They are fed very well - probably bette than some humans, and they are very well taken care of by their owners.

Dogs have died but it is rare. I work up there. The dogs love it. You would know it if you could see it first hand. Dogs love going places and smelling different things and familiar things. There are enough dogs in a team to pull the sleds 2 or 3 times over. The only thing that is bad in a sense is that allot of dogs or any animal does not know when to quit. .....Hey....Is that you in your avatar picture? You are very pretty...Hope this answer helped.
PS They don't go over any water that is thin enough to go through. The race is strictly regulated.

The Iditarod has a long running tradition of being a safe (for the animals) and regulated race. These are not dogs from puppy mills, these are breeds meant to work and well adapted to the climate. This is the Superbowl for dogs. They train almost a lifetime for it and in the case of a show dog, they are usually treated better then most people treat their children. I suggest you travel to Alaska and watch these marvelous dogs and the owners who love them. As for your definition of cruel, cruel would be to allow a 4 year old child who is left unsupervised access to a kitten where it can cause injury or death. It is the parents of that child who is not fit to raise children or animals. Sometimes it is in societies best interest in taking that old saying in have your pet spayed or neutered and applying it to the family members (in regards to you last post, and suggesting euthanizing a 4 year old child)

the dogs used for that race are bred specifically for that. they aren't your normal, run of them mill domestic dog. They are very burely, strong, well adapted animals. They don't over wok them, because that would be counter productive in the long run. Many sled racers take care of the animales better than they take care of themselves. But to answer your second question, if they fall through the ice, more than likely they will freeze to death, just like any animal that lives out there would.

i think that the dogs are bred for that. they use dogs that have very heavy winter coats and most of them enjoy the race. the people that do these races usually take good care of their dogs because they are their teammates and if the dogs go down they are stuck. i do not think that they freeze to death except in extreme circumstances. the racers know what kind of conditions they are going into and are prepared

The dogs love it! It would be animal cruelty to stop the race.
