If you are talking about unlisted number, you pay just to have the number not to be listed in the phone directory. However, on caller ID, the number can still show up.
Here, you can pay for telco service not to have your number to show on caller ID devices, including digital handsets and handphones. It is just a code to key in to turn on or off the caller ID.

Bingo, you're right!! But it costs a small fee to get unlisted, but big advantage to get undisturbed by annoying cold calls..

yes, it also mean that person is probably working in sales, or hates cold calling enuf to have it "private"... cost some money

yep. it helps a lot too because annoying salespeople won't call you up. also, it appears as 'no number' on cell phones etc.
