Just out of curiosity. If someone uses a "private number", does that mean that this phone number is not displayed in the Yellow Pages?

Yes, a "private number" or unlisted number is not displayed in the Yellow Pages nor in the Residential and Business listings of the Singapore Telephone Books.

If you are talking about unlisted number, you pay just to have the number not to be listed in the phone directory. However, on caller ID, the number can still show up.
Here, you can pay for telco service not to have your number to show on caller ID devices, including digital handsets and handphones. It is just a code to key in to turn on or off the caller ID.

Bingo, you're right!! But it costs a small fee to get unlisted, but big advantage to get undisturbed by annoying cold calls..

yes... it means the number is unlisted and you have to pay a small sum of money to get it unlisted.

yes, it also mean that person is probably working in sales, or hates cold calling enuf to have it "private"... cost some money

yep. it helps a lot too because annoying salespeople won't call you up. also, it appears as 'no number' on cell phones etc.
