The Luck of the Irish: Success Has Many Fathers
Ireland's economic transformation ranks up there with the best of the Asian Tigers -- with the bonus of having been spared the occasional economic meltdown of its rivals in Asia. Twenty years ago, Irish GDP per person was about two-thirds of the EU average. Thanks to economic growth rates that averaged 6.9% throughout the 1990s, by 2003 Ireland's GDP was a third higher than the EU average. Unemployment fell from 17% in 1987 to 4%. Government debt shrank from 112% of GDP to 33%. Nor has the pace of expansion slowed noticeably in recent years. GDP is forecast to grow by 5.8% in 2006 and by 5.3% in 2007.
Ireland got a lot of things right. Joining the EU in 1973 helped kick-start the reconstruction of its dilapidated infrastructure. As a low-cost exporter, access to a European single market helped transform Ireland into the EU's export champion. Investment in the Irish education system by the government in the 1960s also transformed a poorly skilled workforce into one of Europe's finest. Ireland's universities played a key role in developing and attracting IT, pharmaceutical and health-care companies. Ireland's skilled workers -- combined with an increase in women's participation in the workforce -- propelled its labor-force participation rate from around 60% in the 1980s to almost 70% today. More people working meant more people generating economic wealth.
Once the no good thieving Brits are out, the growth will go through the roof. And this historical stupidity from ukcuf..."The US would have been discovered at a later date by probably either Spain or France and you would be speaking Spanish or French right now." Chris Columbus, Italian, working for the Spanish crown is given credit for finding America.
UKCUF...You seem to be a Brit...History and honesty are not your long suit!

The Irish contribue very little, but they make nice roads and run good breweries..
The Scots are quite good at banking, civil-engineering, heavy drinking and complaining.
The Welsh sing wonderfully.
As for being a failed entity, the UK is still the 5th largest economy in the world, and per capita, far more productive than China, Russia , India and France.
The German economy, in a country twice the size of England, is only marginally better off.
Sadly, under a (Scottish) Labour government, there is now a massive gap between the mega-rich and the poorest, which explains why most people are not very well off.

No we are not, The UK Founded the modern world as you see it today, and England was right in the heart of the UK doing most of it. We were the first country to have the Industrial Revolution, we invented the Steam Engine, we colonised and civilised the world as you know it. England and to a lesser extent, the rest of the UK, Spain and France made the modern world what it is today.
And to the person who said we are the US's "Lapdog". - If the UK vanished from the face of the Earth and History itself not only would the world be very different, but the US would not exist. Fact. (and neither would Australia). The US would have been discovered at a later date by probably either Spain or France and you would be speaking Spanish or French right now. (even thought YOU wouldn't exist because you are a descentdant, like every other American of, the English.

Will someone please explain to me, what is England, and who exactly are the English???
One of the greatest military figures in British history, His Grace, the Duke of Wellington, was actually Irish.
In WW2 Field Marshall Montgomery was actually Welsh. Most of the best generals of the British Army have been either Scottish or Welsh.
Most of our greatest ever political leaders, with the exception of Winston Churchill, have not been English.
Our present PM is Scottish and most of his cabinet are Irish, Scottish and Welsh.
The Welsh words for England, translated from Welsh into English merely mean - "lost land". England does not exist in the minds of the Celts.

No England is the doormat which subsidises its neighbours . Its time for England to have its own Parliament and true Independence outside the EU . West minister is the UK Parliament which has Scots MP's influencing English domestic affairs yet has its own Parliament and the Welsh have an assembly . And we give billions to the corrupt EU we would be better of out i find it bizarre the the SNP want Independence yet support the EU like that's Independence being run by Brussels. Its time for the English to wake up we have been taken for a ride for far to long .

Are you kidding? England (forming by the far the largest part of the UK) is one of the trillion dollar super-states of the European Union. The London stock exchange is larger than all the other European stock exchanges combined.
The country's unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the EU as well.
Check the CIA World Factbook for details on the UK's current economic power.

No...England is not a failed entity by any stretch of the imagination. If it were then why would all the lesser nations spend so much time complaining about it whilst living here and enjoying that very prosperity???
What England is...and has been for a thousand years or more...is a mixture of tribes who by and large have accepted a degree of instability in order to benefit from rapid change. The industrial revolution started in England for this very reason.
If the other nations are still feeling agrieved over English success, try turning the clock back to the time of the Romans...and do please let us know when you achieve it.
Yours sincerely,
The English.
P.S., Happy Christmas!

England is failing because they have moved too far to the left. Socalists policies usually result in higher taxes and less productivity. In regards to the Irish, Scottish and Welsh, England tried to assimilate them instead of granting them independance. This is why it is important we also Iraq to have their own independance when they can stop the unelected insurgents on their own. History will bear out that Bush's policies were right. Anyone who has a better idea should run for office. Hi Ri.
