Growing up, there was never a formal Christmas Eve dinner and I wanted some ideas as to what to cook. I know that traditional dishes are fish. I was going to make mussells in marinara and crab legs. What are some other dishes I can put together?

WOW that sounds complicated and fantastic! You know what, the best thing for you to do, is just enjoy what ever you cook! You favorite dishes to cook!! The more you enjoy what you are cooking, the more love and attention to detail you will put in it! People will remember that, and not what was served to the table!! You will do great. Your enthusiasm will be the primary ingredient! Dont make it too hard, and challenge yourself a little, so that you can be proud!!! Good Luck and dont forget the milk and cookies for Santa!

Well in the south some foods are traditional in the sense it what you make has special meaning like for health and success. It's about culture. You can decide what to make by finding out what your guests consider as traditional and make a menu from that. You can't make something for everyone but you can choose what's generally liked.

Formal dinners are a thing of the past. If I were you, I'd keep it simple. Finger sandwiches, chips with a nice dip, cold cuts, cheese platter and a bowl of fruit. Remember, YOU have clean it up Christmas morning!

I didn't know that it was traditional to have fish on Christmas eve. My family always makes a big pot of chili on Christmas eve and then we have it after we get back from church. It's very relaxed and informal.
