jpg is a format used for compressing inages to a more managble sizes, others being .tiff .gif .png
Photoshop is a graphics editing software, used for editing photographs and graphics. It is concidered as one of the best pieces of software to use
Fireworks is also a pice of graphics editing software, this is usually used alongside dreamwarver to help create websites graphics, although photoshop is very good at doing the same thing.
So the difference is jpg is a file extension, photoshop and fireworks are pieces of software that can be used to create images, or edit photographs.

Fireworks works natively in PNG format, so only for opening, or specific saving, will it deal with JPGs.
Photoshop has much more control over the filesize and quality of the JPG when saving.

jpeg is a high quality file format used for photos. It stands for joint photographic experts group. There should be no difference between fireworks and photoshop jpg file formats. You can save your file at different resolutions. 72 ppi, 300 ppi etc.

.jpg is a image extension as well as .gif. All animated clipart as well as other images are in .gif form and .jpg can not keep the same extension if converted to animation. It then becomes a .gif creation. You can however change the extensions from one to the other. .jpg to .gif and vice verses. If you change a animated .gif to a .jpg extension it however will nolonger be animated.
