The truck is running great, but I am wondering if I need to have the vehicle serviced or if it is just coming on because its close to 40,000. My car is a 2005 Chevy Equinox, runs great and I have never had a problem with it.

It may have a 35,000 mile service reminder, or your gas cap might not be screwed on tight enough (OBDII will do that).

I've read where the EGR valves in some '05 model Equinoxes chronically fail.

If you live close to an AutoZone, they can pull the OBDII code for you and give you a print out for free of the codes that are returned.

Below is a link to OBDII and the gas cap's role:

The check engine light is connected to 160 different emissions components. Including the gas cap and many sensors. It only comes on when one or more component is malfunctioning. Some places can scan and give you the code but only a dealer can diagnose and repair the car correctly. Most small garages don't have the tools to repair and read codes for a 2005. Plus, dealers warranty all of their work for 12 months or 12,000 miles!

Make sure the gas cap is properly seated. Consider buying an Actron OBD-II code reader ($100) which will allow you to easily plug into the OBD-II diagnostic connector located under the steering column and dash. Actron is available at the typical auto parts stores. Then you'll know what the check engine light is saying before you go to a dealer for service etc.

It probably justs needs a check up. The computers are set to come on when they reach a certain mileage. Everything is more than likely fine, but only the dealer can reset the engine light!

find the last two slots on the right top row of slots on the diagnostic connector under steering wheel and jumper them with short wire or paperclip, then turn switch on but don't crank starter and check engine light will blink once then twice(which is the number 12, which means you got the right two and the car is in diagnostic mode) it'll repeat this three times. after that count sets of flashes as first number then second number. it too will repeat three times then go to the next number. if 12 starts again you have no problem. if another number flashes, write it down and wait for another, each will flash three times (after last number goes three times 12 will return) Now you have the code call dealer and ask for interpretation.

WHEN ENGINE LIGHTS COME ON THAT ONLOY MEANS THAT THERE IS A BAD SENSOR SOMEWHERE. THIS IS NOT A BIG PROBLEM AT ALL. JUST HAVE THE CODE RAN ON YOUR SUV AND THEN REPLACE THE SENSOR THAT IS BAD. OR IF U DONT CARE THAN DONT DO ANYHTING AT ALL. IT WONT HURT. YOU MIGHT GET WORSE GAS MILAGE BUT YOUR VEHICLE WILL NOT BE DAMAGED IF LEFT UNTREATED

Goto AutoZone(if you can) and get the code pulled for free. Otherwise goto the dealer or any auto repair shop and get an estimate for the repair.

I would, you never know, it could just be a sensor, a short, or something more serious. You don't want to be stranded on Christmas.
