It is not the same thing. When a man refers to wife as 'my wife' then it is assumed that the man is the real head of household. When he refers to his wife as 'the wife', then it is presumed that the woman earns more than him and he listens to her and hates the whole arrangement.

He has a lack of respect for his wife. My wife is always referred to as "my wife", not the wife, or the old lady...I have to much respect and love for her.

He's joking, I sometimes refer to my wife as "the little woman."

As most woman consider that term as well as the one "The little woman" I find it demeaning as do allot of woman.

However, my opinion on why men do it is, they think it makes them look like a big man and they are trying to impress their buddies, once they grow up it should stop.

The other reason may be that he grew up in a low class environment and was exposed to that type of demeaning language from his family and friends and doesn't know that its wrong.
