So what if he was upset about the goal post. Be a man and not a coward. You want to fight you grab Spacek and face him and then drop the gloves. It was clearly an intent to injure. He dropped his gloves without Spacek looking at him and sucker punched him from behind. If he doesn't get suspended, the NHL will have a problem down the road with players thinking that this is ok. If something like that happened in the streets....the cops would have been called and Nichols would have been arrested for assault. Nichols is an ok player, but not a star.....so I think the NHL will probably make an example out of him. He could be suspended for the remainder of the year. I think he should be suspended for the rest of the year. Otherwise we could have another Todd Bertuzzi skating out there.
Dohen....Bertuzzi was suspended for the season. However, the season turned out ot be the strike season he was suspended for. So, no lesson was learned there. In my opinion I would have to agree with you....very similar incident to Bertuzzi.

The 9 game suspension he got I think is just right. Spacek did not get seriously injured on the play so you can not suspend Nichols nearly as long as what Bertuzzi got (in terms of the entire season). I think the NHL needs to take a look at their game and get rid of these sorts of blatant violent acts. They want to get rid of fighting but what they do not realize is that in a fight (at least most of the time) the 2 players are willing to do it, where as in these situations there is almost always a guy getting blindesided.

At least 20 games if not the whole season. What a tough guy he is to go behind and completely sucker punch Spacek - guess you have to be that way when you're only 5'8". Toughen up, we all hit the crease in games, both players struck it, he just totally snapped but you never go after someone from behind, what a punk.

it will take Colin Campbell a week to clearly look at this incident and when he decides a punishment he will be suspended but not for the remainder of the season. he may get 6 to 10 games for this incident.
UPDATE>>>> Nashville Predators forward Scott Nichol was suspended for nine games by the NHL on Friday for his sucker-punch to the head of Buffalo defenseman Jaroslav Spacek.
Nichol will be eligible to return Jan. 13 against Columbus and will lose $25,267 in salary.
SEE I WAS RIGHT AND YOU GIVE ME TWO THUMBS DOWN, I SEEN THE GAME AND WHAT HAPPEN ANYBODY SAYING IT'S LIKE BERTUZZI WELL IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE.

He needs about 10 games. This wasn't premeditated, like the Bertuzzi hit on Moore. It was in the heat of the game. Give him 10.
Not that losing him for more games would hurt Nashville. He's pretty far down the pecking order for forwards on that team.
UPDATE: The NHL suspended him for nine games. Good enough.

I'd suspend for the rest of the season.
What a cowardly puke of a guy to sucker punch.
Fight like men--face to face.
An insult to hockey and since he's no superstar maybe the league will have the stones to throw the book at this idiot.

At least a 5 game suspension and at least $10,000 fine. The problem with the NHL is that it has been too soft on disciplinning players for offenses like that.
