It is a genuine question in that it reflects the fact that the US is still to too great an extent a racist nation.
The better question, though, might be this - how much longer can the world as a whole afford to have rich, white, arrogant and self-serving males as US presidents?

I don't think it is a stupid question. I don't think it is a racist questions. It is a real question. America is not ready for a blacks period. If the average white American had his or her way they would put us all on a boat going east. Like it or not we still live in a racist country. That is just the way it is. No America is not ready to sit down and address black issues at least not until they become white issues or some profit in it. We will have a Gay President, an Asian President, and a Hispanic President before we have one black anything. And then when do get a black President they will be so out of touch with what is really going on that they will only be black by definition. Look at what happens when a hurricane goes through Florida time and time again, now compare that to what is still going on in New Orleans. Say there is no racial divide if you want to - the proof is in the pudding. And no it is not Bush's fault it is every-bodies fault. When the Tsunami happened the world wide aid was overnight, and Katrina happened it was like "you'll be OK" Irony.

It is a REAL question. Given the hitory of race relations and the current state in this country.....can the country accept a black president or even a female president!
For all the advances this socitey has made, it is still a very conservative society. Look at the debate on gay relationships, stem cell research etc! These are qtns for a modern society but the debate is never elevated to more than 1906 rhetoric...it's agst the rule of God! What!
Note that only 12% of the population is black and probably one/third cannot vote either due to age, incarceration etc...so which part of society do you think has the influencing vote! It's a valid qtn because it asks us whether or not we have changed our evil ways! Have we? I watch the news and I wonder!!!!!

I think the vast majority of Americans are more concerned about the candidate's position on different issues than they are about the color of their skin or whether they are a male or female. Oh, there will be those extremists on both ends of the political spectrum that will try to make wild claims about whether a black person or a women can or cannot do a good job as President. But I think the vast majority of mainstream Americans really don't care about such things. They will look at the qualifications of each candidate and their positions on the hot issues of the day and place their votes based on how they interpret those things.
Like an earlier respondent said, I think American has been ready for years for a black president or even a woman. Unfortunately, our national media will focus a great deal of attention on those extremist on both ends of the race issue if either Secretary Rice or Senator Obama decide to throw their hat in the ring. But, in my opinion, most Americans will dismiss the views of such people and see them for what they are, bigots plain and simple.

Its a genuine question. Whether the nation as a whole is "psychologically ready" to elect a black president, or a woman president, is open to question right now. I remember, in 1959, we went through the same type of thing when we talked about whether the nation was "ready for a Catholic president." It requires that society be willing to make a fairly big paradigm change, and that requires a lot of work.

It is a genuine question and I am a black woman. We live in a racist world, and there a line that most blacks cannot cross. I do think that we should feel this way. However, can a black honestly go to some of these foreign countries without being attacked, killed etc.
Can a black man tell Congress, The Senate etc what to do without their being some backlash in the media. It is an immoral question. However, face it!
This is the world that we live in.

I'm not american, but according to my family that lives in the US, they've been ready for years for a black president or even a woman. I don't think this question was meant to be taken a racist, and although we do live in a racist kind of world.

To a point it is racist question. but on the other hand you have there are also females that are thinking about running also. years ago a female and black didnt have the rights for anything.
even when it comes to religon a lot of people dont think that a female should be a leader. but times are changing and so are people.

I was ready for a black president several years ago. However, Colin Powell let it be known up front that he would not run. In my book, that was just another reason why he would be perfect. The rest is media hype.

Ha,ha,ha.
As soon as a black President gets his feet under his desk inside the White House, there'll be a bullet winging its way through the Oval office with his name on it.
