Who you decide to develop fully in FFXII is totally up to you.

Some characters do have a bonus in certain attributes. For example, if all members are of equal levels, Ashe and Penelo will have higher magic stats, while Vaan and Basche will have higher strength stats.

But the difference is, for the most part, insignificant. At higher levels, any one will do.

At lower levels, it is best, as the previous answer says, to level up all members, unless you wish to play the game with only 3 members as an added challenge.

The best players at the early stages in the game will vary widely based on the situation. Do you need magick users for the situation you are facing, ranged attackers, or fighters? Your party should be composed of the people who are most suited to the job - it is best to develop at first, people excelling in those three categories - melee fighting, ranged fighting, magicks.

As the game gets to higher levels, all of your party will be able to do the same job. Pick three people you like, give them your favorite gear, and with perhaps embroidered tippets for some double exp, and have their levels climb as much as you want :)

Hmmm. I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan, but I have to say that I found XII to be a huge disappointment. The story is pretty dull, and even confusing at times. The characters don't have the depth you normally find in FF - not even as good as in IX. If there is a big romance in FFXII, it hasn't happened yet and my friend's son reliably informs that I'm very close to the end of the game. There are licences you can buyto increase HPs and you will need them. Sadly, the combat system sucks. To control the battles you use a gambits system. This basically chooses all your possible moves for you - including casting of healing spell, priority of enemies to attack, and even what to do if an ally is poisoned, blinded or knocked out. So the game boils down to walking from each location to the next. You don't even have to really single out the monsters on your way either and your characters will just attack them. When the fight begins you just sit back and watch. Afterwards, you move on to the next one and sit back and watch again. After a while, you stop caring about the lame story and just move from one place to the next and wait for the pretty graphics - of which there aren't a lot cutscene-wise. And even though it's all very pretty, after a while you start to become bored. You're waiting for the big romance to start and it doesn't. You're waiting for the big enemy to turn up and he doesn't. You're waiting for the story to take shape and it doesn't. It's not like the other Final Fantasy games at all. Even the summoned creatures are crap and do very little. It's just a walk around and fight game ... but with fights you don't partake in. Eventually, you'll yawn, take out the disk and start playing FFX again. And then you'll wonder how it could have gone from Tidus and Co to the dreary gameplay of XII. Still, it's better than some of the games you can get, and for me, FFXII is still more interesting than the best 1st person shooter. I hate 1st person shooters! Even after all I said though, I still recommend you get it. Just because I was disappointed it doesn't mean you will be.

I would have to say you shouldn't have 3 top people to train. A lot of times you substitue your main party for other memebers. You want to make sure all og your guys are close to the same level so you have an equal shot against whoever your fighting. I have two main guys that always lead the party and I switch other the others every time one levels up.

My 3 fave are Balthier, Basch, and Fran. I use them as my primary party. But I recommend keeping all 6 of your characters close until you hit lvl 50, then concentrate on 3 characters. This way, if you have to replace one of your reg. party with a secondary character, they are up to the challenge. Have fun!
