its larger than an infected hair would be and there is no redness around the area. its not where the hair grows anyway. its hard to the touch. what could it be?

Does it hurt? How long has it been there? I suggest to see a skin specialist if the bump either gets larger, inflamed or any other change. If its a relatively new bump maybe wait a few days and see it might just go away too. Main thing, if it hurts, just tell your wife to see a doctor asap.
