me & the missus always argue about it being called either a quilt as in continental quilt, or a duvet.
I argue that the duvet is the american term and quilt is the european term. what do you think?

A duvet is also called a comforter. It is filled with either feathers, down, a combination of the two, or a high-loft filling. They are usually fairly puffy. The pillowcase that many people have referred to is NOT a duvet - it is a duvet COVER (also called a comforter cover). It is used both to protect the duvet itself (which is often quite difficult to wash) and to change the appearance of it, because the duvet is usually a solid color, often white.

A quilt is two layers of fabric with a layer of some sort of batting between them. The layers are stitched together in a pattern, sometimes a grid, sometimes an allover pattern, sometimes with motifs like flowers, etc. It may also be tied instead of stitched. It is fairly thin and flat. It may be a solid fabric on both sides (called a wholecloth quilt), it may be solid on one side and made of smaller pieces of fabric sewn together (patchwork or applique) on the other side, or it may be pieced on both sides. A quilt does NOT use a cover - it is decorative on it's own.

"Duvet" is a French term, and in the United States it is often referred to as a comforter. "Quilt" is from a Middle-English word that derived from an earlier French word. Quilted clothing was made thousands of years ago, although it was much more recently that it was used in making bedcovers. Quiltmaking has a long tradition in the United States, as well as many other countries throughout the world.

WHAT IS DUVET?
A duvet (or comforter) is a two sheets of cotton (or similar fabric), that is fiulled with soft wool, foam or downing.
A duvet also comes in three catagories :-
1)Winter
Thickly padded & fluffy, the most snugglesome duvet ever.
2)All year
Medium weight, semi fluffy, good for Autum & Spring.
3)Summer
Super thin, more of a glorified sheet, this one nearly sucks.

WHAT IS QUILT?
Simply put, a quilt is a 'sandwich' made of three layers:
Top: the decorative layer which is usually made from small fabric pieces or 'patches' sewn together in a creative and artistic manner.
Batting: a thermal layer of matted cotton, wool, polyester or silk fibers which gives warmth and dimension to the quilt.
Backing: the bottom layer, usually made from one piece of fabric (although sometimes pieced), which lends strength to the quilt and smoothness to the side next to the skin.

These three layers are held together in one of three ways:
1)Hand quilting: the small, even hand-executed running stitches usually seen on older quilts. This method is still the popular choice of quilters today.
2)Machine quilting: quilting that is done with a sewing machine, a method which is rapidly increasing in popularity.
3)Tying: evenly spaced knots or bows which hold the layers together at wider intervals than quilting. Done by hand or machine, this method makes a fat, puffy quilt called a comforter.

In America, a "duvet" is something that you put OVER a comforter (most likely a down comforter). The "duvet" protects your comforter from oils, dirt, and the feathers!!

In America, a "quilt" is a blanket. It is usually decorative and made of different pieces of material. It is almost an art form...especially for the old ladies!! They learn different stitches and techniques...they have been doing it for 100's of years. In th old days (and some today) there were "quilting bees" where women would get together to work on quilts!!

I call it a duvet but when i am changing the sheets i refer to them as the "quilt cover".
So basically I put the quilt cover on the duvet which then turns it into a duvet again!!!
weird hey but I never actually thought about it until now

In England it's called a duvet, in America it's called a comforter. A quilt is a thin blanket made up of small patches of material.

Go for the micro fibre ones as they are far easier to maintain via a washing machine whereas the feather variety can stink to high hell if not properly dried after washing, drying can take days unless done professionally. If however you do want the warmest then 100% EIDER DOWN is considered the very best and most luxuriously expensive. This DOWN comes from the nest of the eider duck. No ducks were harmed in the printing of this note.
