..a problem in itself [ie seeing cartoon violence and laughing at it doesnt present a problem]

..........but the fact that bart&lisa are themselves laughing at the violence [which addults can perceive is ironic] young minds might be making the connection-----cruelty=fun or cruelty=laughter.

i know its only a cartoon for godsake..but dont other people think there is a distinct difference between seeing funny violence and laughing at it....as opposed to seeing a character laughing at violence that is occuring?

none of you seem to have got the point.

i am not crticising what the cat n mouse characters are doing....if that was all we were seeing.....
i am saying i think the entire dynamic is altered when we cut to lisa&bart observing and finding the cruelty hilarious.

it changes things in the childs perception from oh how funny the animals are behaving to: bart and lisa are enjoying the cruelty and finding it fun.

it plants a seed or link in the mind that because an observing character is observing and laughing at the cruelty, the cruelty is in some way made acceptable.

obviously the child is not conscious of any of this.
but just because youre not consciously aware doesnt mind you arent soaking up influences.

You seem to be overthinking the issue.

Itchy ad Scratchy aren't "funny" cartoons. They're horrific.

Cartoons like "Tom and Jerry" and some of the classic "Loony Toons" cartoons depicted manic cartoon violence, but the characters shook it off and kept on chasing each other. Itchy and Scratchy change the format by irrevocably mutilating or killing each other.

They are meant as a parody of the idea that kids watch love and faithfully watch violent cartoons. If you know any real kids, you know that they are more into "Spongebob" and "Jimmy Neutron" than they are into any violent offering. (Shows like Naruto or Dragonball Z have teen followings or older...)

The humor comes from the fact that we adults are more likely to have grown up with the kind of violent cartoons that Bart and Lisa see on their TV than our kids are.

It's generational. The Three Stooges were worse and the cartoons we watched were far more violent than alot of the stuff on today. It's not right but it must sell and that's the bottom line.

You are right, and make a very good point.
Itchy & Scratchy are a satirical portrayal of tom&jerry;tweetybird; roadrunner, etc cartoons. They subtly point out that these are pointless and nonsense shows that have a way too big following.

I do not think they are the only portrayals of violence that we should tolerate on TV - it is important to have freedoms, humour and educational programming on television, without undue censorship.

Certainly it's tasteless humor, but it doesn't make me like The Simpsons any less. Besides, the show isn't for kids.
