The difference between these two business processes is really quite simple. While marketing is about identifying and satisfying a customer's needs, sales is all about fulfilling these needs that have been created.

Sales reps are responsible to close contracts, new business arrangements and manage existing client accounts.
Sales and Marketing do crossover in some roles and they must work closely together.
Here are some of the areas where they delineate and crossover:
Target Market Analysis - Marketing / Sales
Offering Definition - Marketing / Product Development
Lead Generation - Marketing / Sales
Discover & Credibility Building - Marketing
Qualification, Pursuit and Closing - Sales
Account Management & Penetration - Sales
Marketing departments are really support systems for the sales departments/reps. Marketing creates product and service image and market strategy.
Hope this helps!

marketing is the process before sales. it is the process of how to "maket" or differentiate or appeal or attract the buyers to the product. so depending on the nature of the product and the way human thinking (black box) process, marketing the same product but with different rationale/approach may result in different reactions.
so marketing reps are the pre-sales people who do the surveys, analyse target market, etc and come up with a concept to associate/appeal the product to the mass.
sales reps are the people who go out and find the buyers and apply selling techniques to appeal and close the sale. the main difference is sales rep go out and meet prospective buyers and sell the product while marketing reps most prob do not.
not really a good explanation probably ....

Marketing is everything that you do to reach and persuade prospects. The sales process is everything that you do to close the sale and get a signed agreement or contract. Both are necessities to the success of a business. You cannot do without either process. By strategically combining both efforts you will experience a successful amount of business growth. However, by the same token if the efforts are unbalanced it can detour your growth.
