Older engine blocks were designed with regular oil in mind. Newer engine blocks are designed with synthetic oil or synthetic blend engine oil in mind to use.
Would it harm an older engine to run synthetic oil or synthetic blends?

the older engines will leak because the seals arent intended for that type of oil, if the engine is older than a 90, id definitly stay with conventional. around 95 youd have to check with the manufacturer or a reliable shop.at this time gm switched over,as had chrysler,and ford

When the full synthetic motor oil Mobil 1 became commonly available in the seventies, it was rumored to negatively affect valve seals. This problem certainly was true with my '75 Dodge Coronet. However, this product has improved, as has regular motor oil. An older engine will not be harmed by synthetic motor oil. There definitely advantages to synthetic oil in temperature extremes and maybe to a car, like a collector car, that is seldom used.

Synthetic oil meets the manufacturer's specifications for any new or old engine. In fact it exceeds those specifications in most cases. Synthetic oil will make any engine run more efficiently and with longer life. This is the known published data accumulated over 50 years of service beginning in World War II in my opinion.

Most of the synthetic oils are much thinner than there normal oil counterparts, and in some engines that lack of viscosity can cause a lubrication problem. Normally, there isn't anything to worry about, but it is possible to blend to two types of oil and get the benefits of both.

Engines will not know the difference between dino oil and man made oil. Usually the man made oil lasts alittle longer and keeps the engine cleaner but have not seen any proof where the block was cleaner when using Synthetic oil over dino oil. And also your engine is like your buttocks it would not know the difference between 1 ply and 2ply. Same principal

The block won't know the difference. The moving parts stay coated in between start-ups with synthetic and increase engine life.
