What would happen if you replaced the word "English" with "Muslim" or "African"? What do you think would happen to this thread. Seems to be that under the veil of free speech, some people just cannot wait to hate on English people, hate based not on what people have done, but on preconceived notions. The foundation for such notions? Selective historical references. I wasn't born 100's of years ago - what makes these hypocrites think I would have agreed to what happened (all of which they're saying is bad)? Do your research. England has some bad problems - but that DOES NOT mean ALL English people are bad. Further, if you want to nit-pick from a history book then you should read more - England wasn't the only country on the map, the only country that saw war, poverty, as well as prosperity. And to this day, a lot of English people still have to suffer the likes of you ignorant types when trying to better their situation, including places like the States where you often need to satisfy a list of entry requirements are long as your arm. Oh but that's OK in your book? The bloke on the tell told you everything you need to know about the English? You've never been out your country but Engand's a convenient target? Psst. Look at your southern border, with Mexico. Look at the millions getting across illegally. Look at the impact on health, welfare, the environment and social cohesion. Still reading? Is it painful? Here's the clincher: almost all of the are NOT ENGLISH! Oh dear.

Because the English love to use America as their personal example of hell on earth because America is such a terrible, fat (let's not forget that, they're oh so slim in Britain), corrupt, greedy, uncultured hell (by English standards).

Most of us could give two hoots about your stupid little island we mass evacuated from decades or hundreds of years ago. We have our problems here but we're not the close minded racists you think we are. Oh and by the way, how are all those Pakistani and Indian slums working for you? You guys are so integrated and progressive after all.

Most of you have never got your lard asses out of England and think we admire you somehow, nothing could be further from the truth. We laugh at you. Maybe if you weren't such an insular, bigoted, society you'd realize that your snobbery is a joke to the rest of the world.

English-born, Italian-bred (parents are Italian immigrants, making me a dual national/citizen). I can safely state the biggest reason why England is disliked: It s an authoritarian society, where appearance and social status are paramount. The class system has created unnecessary tension by dividing people into groups and labelling them as such. People who can t defend themselves (children, young people, disabled people, elderly) are seen and never heard (I am not joking when I say England IS NOT a child-friendly country - never has been). Obedience is expected at all times and justice, ethics and morality appear to be severely lacking (perpetrators are let go, while victims are stigmatised). It s as if the wicked are rewarded and evil is encouraged. Not all people are like this, true, but the neo-Victorian mentality is still at large and is doing no favours.

I know this is a very old question, but I will answer just because it stills comes up with search results. I live in America, and in the chicago suburban town where I live, most educated people really enjoy aspects of English culture. For example, your accents are very admired as ours aren't as kind on the ears. Some british TV shows are also very popular, such as Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Who and Downton Abbey. In terms of the bad teeth comments, Americans have stereotypes for everything, including themselves. I mean, I'll be the first to say I'm an ignorant white person! If the worst English stereotype is bad teeth and tea-time, count yourselves lucky! We Americans tend to be pretty harsh on ourselves!

I am Italian but lived in England from my late teens to my late twenties. I can honestly say it scarred me for life. I only realized how truly unfriendly, arrogant, bigoted, two-faced, and self-obsessed the English are when I finally managed to flee their sad little island. And I could forgive some poorly educated old man living on a rotten council estate for having a biased view of foreigners, but the problem is that the English are ALL discouragingly blind to the fact that England is not this amazingly wonderful paradise on earth everyone wants to live in. In fact, the worst ones are the so-called progressive, you know, the Guardian readers. They are ok with immigrants as long as the sole purpouse of their existence is to roll them a shawarma before they stumble home after having drunk themselves (even more) stupid in this smelly, carpeted institution called “the pub”. When they are working or studying abroad they hang out exclusively in their smug anglo-enclave because they can't be bothered to learn another language, since apparently "everyone speaks English". Well, they don't, which is exactly why they just float around in their little UK/US expat bubble passing patronizing and completely uninformed comments on "the natives". And if they do invite a token foreigner along, they will make sure that the poor sod gets his accent mocked or that every negative stereotype ever associated with his country is repeatedly brought up. I cannot count on my fingers and toes how many times some ignorant bastard has thought it funny to say stuff like “so is your father in the mafia, right”? Or “this country is so corrupt... but of course being Italian this is childplay for you”. Or, tried to pass off as cultured with snide comments about Italy “changing sides during the war” (not actually true and most certainly not relevant), or our former prime minister's penchant for younger women (“lecherous old clown!”) – none of whom was either raped or a child, unlike those who fell in the clutches of the pedophiliac beehive that was (is) the English entertainment industry. What I wonder is why the English always feel the need to DEMEEN foreigners with what they think are witty comments which the insulted person should, according the their asinine logic and complete inability to empathise, find enlightening and endearing: “The great Englishman has gifted me with an opinion about my shitty little country: praise to the mighty Englishman! And now if you excuse me, like a good extra from a Coppola movie I will start wailing about my corrupted, fascist, crime-ridden motherland in my best Dolmio accent”. Actually England, go **** yourself and learn to deal with this clear inferiority complex of yours with something a bit more evolved than playground bully tactics.

English people are bigoted and think the whole world wants to live in their miserable country. Don't worry England I'll make sure I won't even put my foot in Heathrow if I can avoid it.

A lot of people hate the British in general because of our greedy and albeit bloodthirsty past. We tried to invade anywhere we could get our hands on, and even though that was hundreds of years ago - people love to hold grudges, especially if bringing up said grudges seemingly makes their home country sound better then yours. As for the 'bad teeth' reference, Americans in particular are very 'on-top' of their health care. Everyone has a therapist, everyone had a brace, and most people aspire to have veneers by the time they're 25. Personally, I love being British. I love our silly little imperfections, it gives us character ^-^

Hi, to answer your question. Nobody likes the English, because the English are an extremely unlikable nationality. This is in part due to statements such as those made by you, but also due to your unqualified use of the English language, your inability to have normal, non-trivial conversations, your obsession with odd sports, your populace's propensity to engage in anti social behavior in country's they frequent as tourists (never have I seen other foreigners trash supermarkets, shop windows, or urinate and defecate in public before), the noise levels you produce, your classy (haha) women... and I'm going to stop here. Let me assure you, it's well deserved.

I'm English and I'm saving up so that I can emigrate. I can't stand the binge drinking culture, the stiff upper lip attitude, posh bastards, Tories, the I'm better than you obsessions, the truly awful weather, the two faced people, the crap food, supermarkets killing small businesses, did I mention the weather? The traffic, it's overcrowded almost everywhere you go and getting worse.

Basically I'm a decent Englishman trying to escape, there's more of us but we are heavily outnumbered by the arseholes.
