'get down to' (verb+adverb+preposition) is a phrasal verb and it means 'to start to direct your efforts and attention (especially a piece of hard work)'. Example :

Move from larger to smaller e.g "get down to more serious Business!". Could also be a methaphor e.g. "get down to the bottom of" could be phrased as "get to the bottom of". Could also be a command. If spoken English it depends on the intonation. If written English this could be followed by ! or !!! for emphasis. Hope this helps.

It means to get to the point or to the basics...to not go around the bush with explinations and get to what you really mean...instead of saying "I went to the store and bought some turkey and in the process of getting the bird I slipped on the floor and twisted my ankle and had to go to the emergency room to get it x-rayed to see if it was broken" you say..."I slipped and twisted my ankle" or the important part of the statement..I hope that helps you!
