A 3G handset allows you to do more with your phone, firstly it is a network that allows people with mobile phones to gain a much faster connection to the internet on their phone, the data is transfered alot faster, this allows 3G users to gain features such as faster connection, TV on your mobile, and also the capability of video calling, some handsets in the nokia range also allow Sat Nav on their handsets.
You can normally tell a phone is 3G because it will have a camera on the front of the phone aswell as the back, this is for using the video calling feature, where you not only talk to the person but you see them on your handset aswell

It is a dilemma in some ways. The fewer the features, the longer the battery life. The really high end phones have less life than the more basic phones. My BlackBerry Storm, which is a fantastic phone, has far less life than my previous BlackBerry Pearl - the Pearl would last four to five days, the Storm barely two. Doing things like reducing the backlight level, keeping Bluetooth off unless needed, not playing games or music etc., can extend it, but really the simplest thing to do is buy a second battery. I bought a second battery for emergency use and rotate it every week or two, plus when I am in the office I plug it into a Amzer docking cradle which also charges my spare battery.

I wouldn't use them.. I sold 3G network phones for about 5 months.. most of the phones broke down,. the network falls over on a regualr basis and the call centre is in a foreign country. I unfortuatley signed up for a contract and I am stuck with it, I never get any reception, the phone keeps cutting off and the battery life is low. If I cancel the contract it will cost me £250 ish but my phone has already been in for repair twice and i still have 8 month contract left of a 12 month! They still won't let me cancel without paying as they offer to "repair" the phone under it's warranty .. don't get one!

Because a 3G phone has a camera on the screen side of the phone, you can video call another person that also has a 3G phone.
