I would say it does, just because no one hears it doesnt mean it doesnt make a sound of any description

Only man could come up with an arrogant concept that a human has to be present for nature to carry on. Certainly it makes a noise, when it crashes, I have heard several growing up along a big forested creek. Others fell also, just becuase I wasn't around did not mean they made no sound, this stupid theory probably has some arrogant religious background and implies the world exists only for man to enjoy and abuse

well now would that be a deciduous tree or an evergreen? a stately oak, or a majestic elm? perhaps a mighty redwood? oaks and redwoods are too proud to make a noise when they fall, whereas sapwood goes on & on. the whispering willow, on the other hand, gently, softly gives up her secrets to whoever will listen. thats the thing- it wont make a sound if nobody listens. the loss of a single tree diminishes all of us. what I want to know is: if a tree falls in the forest, and no one is there to hear it, do I still have to pay my ex her alimony?

Of course it makes a noise. Since a tree doesn't know if there's anyone around, it must make the same sound whether there's someone there to hear it or not.

Yes it would as long as there is something around that is capable of hearing it. ie animals. A tree falling over wouldn't make a noise to a deaf person would it.

Define sound. If you define sound as the ripples in the air that the tree will cause then yes it makes a sound. If you define sound as the electrical signals produced by your ear drums that your brian interprets and registers then no it doesn't make a sound. As generally we take sound as being something made up from both these things I would say it either makes half a sound or as all parts need for sound are not there that it makes no sound at all. Just depends how you want to look at it.

Of course it does. The fact that no one hears the noise is not relevant.
Besides, maybe theres a little mouse in the forest you don't know about and he heard the sound, you know

stop Yes of course it does. If you left recording equipment then it would pick up the sound even if no-one was there.

I've heard this asked before, but the question is just plain dumb. The presence of ears does not stop a sound from happening. It just stops anyone hearing it.

yes, since the sound is made by changes in air pressure due to a force being exerted, the noise would be there even if everyone was deaf
