my optical mouse would have a mind of its own and jumped all over the screen without my hand on it.

Theres a variety of mouses?? mice? on the market, the type you had with a ball are prone to picking up dirt and dust and the contacts then get clogged up and you have to clean them, which may be the problem you have now, get something to clean the small bar type things inside the mouse where the ball sits. You can buy an optical mouse, this is the type i use it is identifiable by having a red beam emitted from the underside of the mouse, you can get one of these for about £10, the third type is a wireless mouse, tho I have never tried these I have heard you have to move them away from the computer when you have finished as the battery inside the mouse wears out, but try cleaning your mouse first before laying out any expenditure

What should you buy? Obviously, a mouse (chuckle, chuckle).
The roller ball type is inexpensive but needs cleaning every so often.
An optical mouse is fine but is more expensive and you may find that your cursor jumps suddenly from one point of the screen to another -- depending on the surface your mouse is on.
The laser type may be your best bet. It depends on how much you are willing to spend. Just shop around. Happy shopping!

You just need to purchase any optical mouse .... here in Oz they start from about $6 for something very basic and go all the way up to $199 for the newer laser type ... somewhere around the $20au gets you a perfectly functional mouse

Well mice are mice, they can be cheap and you'll get the older roller ball style, or a bit more and you'll get the laser style. Personally I find the laser style ore precise and no cleaning, but you shouldnt want to pay more than £15
