The reason he is applying for Spanish citizenship is to qualify as an EU based player, thus allowing Barcelona to sign an additional non-EU based player if they wish, and also making himself more marketable to European teams. There are also tax benefits for him and his club as an EU based player.

In fact, there is NOTHING in FIFA rules which states that someone who has played for one nation cannot later play for another nation if he becomes qualified for them by normal means, such as becoming a naturalized citizen. So, in theory, yes, he COULD eventually play for Spain...but its not very likely that the best player in the world is suddenly going to be dropped for ever by Brazil , is it?!

no he can't, when a player plays for a national team at the senior level, he cant represent another country, but if he played for the under 21s or 23s or youth team for a certain country, he can still represent another country at the senior level, he can only play at the senior level for just 1 country, not more. the citizenship for ronaldinho will allow barcelona to get more non-european players....cuz the maximum amount of non-european players in for 1 team in spain is 5 .

He would qualify if he hadn't already represented Brazil internationally. Getting his citizenship just means Barca can have another non-EU national in the squad,

im not quite sure, once you have played for a country at senior level you are not supposed to be able to play for another country, but in the past i think ferenc puscas played for hungary then while playing for real madrid he applied for spanish citizenship then i am sure he went on to play for spain!
