Get the firefox browser and use the adblock plus addon. It will block a lot of adverts and it is easy to block other adverts that it misses

Zone Alarm is good, I'd say opt for the complete Security Suite but it can be a hassle at times. I use the Google toolbar and it does a pretty good job at blocking banner ads, etc. Yahoo!'s is similar I imagine.

To remove annoying pop-ups from your internet interface you can use Pop-up Blocker.
I found a free download of Pop-up Blocker here http://bit.ly/UaQ1ck

I second the Firefox switch, it's far superior when it comes to nifty add ons. If you don't want to swap, try Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Panicware Popup Stopper or a combination of all three.

My advice would be to use Mozilla Firefox as your browser instead of Internet Explorer. You can download it for free, and it's really simple to customise. I use it all the time and NEVER get any unwanted pop-up, which I personally feel is one of the banes of the internet! Try it.

Spybot Search & Destroy sorts out any adware/spyware on your computer, then Google toolbar would do the trick, with Spybot running in the background. AND THEY'RE BOTH FREE!!!
