Hello,

I used to work in computing & IT support a few years ago and we used to have Mac G3's & G'4 connected to a mixed NT4 network.

If my memory serves me correctly, you have to have the correct network protocols installed on the MAC client machine which then allows it to work in the mixed network environment.

Why? because the MAC uses appletalk I think and so for it to work in a mixed network you have to install extra protocols & protocol drivers from the networking setup side of things.

**Also the G3 & G4's Macs couldnt see or talk to all of our NT4 servers back in 2000, we did have some special appleshares setup so we could exchange files from one system to another but it did have some limitations I believe due to file formats.

I wish I could give you an accurate answer but you didn't give enough info. What version of operating system? Do you connect to the network via wireless or via built-in ethernet? What is this about the 2 locations? Why did you make an extra location? How are the 2 locations configured? Obviously, they are not identical since one allows you to download updates and send-receive email. If one location does everything you want, why would you change to the poorly performing location? What is the advantage of the poorly performing location? When you say it is a "PC network" do you mean that there is a file server or mail server or proxy server that is a Windows computer? If not, then it is a peer-to-peer network so, in fact, it is not really a PC network even though most of the computers are Windows computers.

Now, about this AppleShare suggestion. OS X is a TCP/IP networking system without the need for AppleShare. Pay no attention whatever to any old ideas about G4 setup with AppleShare networking. That was for OS 8 or OS 9, not OS 10. All OS X Macs will connect to any Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP computer without any AppleShare setup at all.

If I had to make a guess, with very little to go on, this network must be feeding through a proxy server. That is the most common reason for a failure of Software Update to download files. You may also find that you cannot share files with a computer that is outside your local network. Maybe you have set Firefox to connect to the proxy server but you did not set the System Preferences / Network pane for the proxy server. Contact the network administrator and request assistance entering the settings for the proxy server in two places:
1. In the System Preferences / Network pane
2. In the System Preferences / Internet pane

The Security Update 2005-001 (Mac OS X 10.3.7 Client) 1.0 was successful for me on my G5 (single 1.8 GHz CPU). I would recommend using the Disk Utility after the update, as the new uid was not set properly on my "at" directories until repairing permissions.
after downloading the Security update 2006-007 I can no longer send attachments with my emails - if anyone knows a fix can you let me know, I have tried MTU packet size.

I am on a G4 with 10.4.8
