It already is a commercial holiday, trying to act like it's a religious affair.

Christmas has been a religious holiday since 336 A.D.
It was the Americans who merged the two histories, beliefs and traditions of Santa Claus(Dec 6) and Father Christmas(Pagan Deity). Now you have a commercial culture based on a dead bishop, flying around the world in 47 hours and 59 minutes, on flying reindeer, delivering presents to good and bad(little brats get presents too) while Donder(thunder) and Blixem(lightning) poo on Frosty the Snowman and Jack Frost is just another Michael Keaton meltdown...all instead of GOD, being born as a man, living as a man, dying as a man, and rising from the dead to conquer death and give sinners(that's all of us) a chance to get into Heaven.
There is both sides. More of a comedic take than a religious rant.
It is no doubt that Christmas would be better off a religious holiday, but that will hardly be the case.
Would Independence Day be better off a holiday celebrating the independence of this country...OR...about Robert the Turtle and William the Eagle's struggle with their gay love and perserverance over society's moral ways by going on a killing spree in New Jersey after being denied the right smoke in the Emergency Room and denied the right to fatty frenchfries at McDonald's in New York, thus leading the two lovers to suicde driving into the Hoover Dam with a bomb, while holding hands like Thelma and Louise, and the country remembering their bravery and boldness forever, in a 2 hour made for tv cgi movie on FOX with limited interuptions?
Which would you choose to celebrate...(although now that I think of it...I would at least like to see that movie trailer)?????

For me, christmas has nothing to do with either/or. It's just a time I spend with my family and eat sugar cookies. I think it's the case for a lot of people.
