There isnt a best snowboarding jacket brand out there as such . Most brands are good and it generally comes down to which jacket you like best style wise and how much you are prepared to spend. Good brands to look for are Bonfire, Burton, Westbeach and Quiksilver all these companys make good quality products if a little pricey at times. Unless you really want to splash out go for one of the lower end jackets as they will function just as well as one of the more expensive ones but without some of the gimmiks which seem to bump the prices up alot.

686 definitely has the best quality gear in my opinion. They have all the bells and whistles on their stuff. The only problem is that their outerwear compared to another companies outerwear will run a bit more expensive (but not that much), but you definitely get what you pay for. Also, there are quite a few styles out there in snowboarding, and if your not sure what he is in to, you can always play it safe with 686, because they seem to have a style that suits almost anybody.

There is probably not a BEST, as many companies' products are about equal in quality. I would focus, instead, on who gives you a good product for a reasonable price. For this reason, I would stay away from companies like Burton, Spider (this is a SKI company, btw), North Face (also, for skiers), etc. Their products are good, but over-priced. Special Blend, Four Square, NFA, and a few others make just as good products, but at a reasonable price. The bonus? They're specifically designed for snowboarding.
Whatever you get, make sure it's waterproof, and warm!

I've used a few different and I just got a spyder set... jacket and pants this year and it's probably the best i've used so far to board. Yes as stated it is made for skiing... but works great for boarding as well... no manueverability problems and it keeps me warm and dry.... VERY warm and dry. But also as stated... a bit expensive, then again, I didn't pay for it, so not too worried... I love my girlfriend! haha ;)
