I would say PS 2 because the ps1 was new to its era. The cd rom had many advantages over current cartridges better audio and visual performance. But it was new the ps 2 honed the technology and made the actual gameplay better. I think you might see a trend
in console devices whenever the technology is new it will have problems then they even out the bugs and make it better. Right now video games are in a slump there shooting for photo realistic environments that's good but it will be a long time before its actually smooth playable and not flat and photo looking.

Comparing both, well, The Ps2 naturally has better graphics and system engines, but the Ps1 has it's own advantages, it has a much wider range of games than the Ps2, and is also a lot of fun to play on... I'd say Ps1 on playability, but Ps2 on the whole.
