Basically, I need to go to Tescos for the mammoth shop and wondered if it would be okay to go once and write one cheque and then later and write another?

Ok technically you should not do this as your agreement with the Bank is that you will not issue cheques unless the funds are available in your account and retailers should only take one cheque from a customer although many do not abide by this rule.

But .....
You will probably get away with it this time of year.

You will need to do 2 seperate shops as the cashier at Tesco can only take one cheque from you not exceeding £100.00 as this is your cheque guarantee limit.

If you shop on Saturday the earliest Tesco can Bank the cheque is Wednesday due to the Christmas Holidays.

If the cheque is Banked on Wednesday The earliest it will hit your account is Friday.

The only exception to this would be if Tesco banked their cheques at the same Bank and Branch where your account is held. This is extremely unlikely and its more probable that teco cheques are deposited straight to a main Branch or clearing centre.

Yes you can do this,i work for a bank-although you should have available funds in account when you write a cheque out(have done this myself must admit) if you write the cheques today the earliest it will leave acc is the week after next due to banks being closed,so your safe go and get your shopping!

Technically there is not any limiit to the size of a cheque the decrease is the cleared money on your account. although because of the fact of information superhighway and different digital ability many uk banks have a decrease of one thousand consistent with day on money transfers/money incredibly those ordered on machines or on line. that's an anti fraud degree to your secure practices! it may be smart to talk to your PB or supervisor and propose them that an better than prevalent transaction is approximately to flow through, they'd then propose you of any precautions that they'd % you to take and so on.

In the banking world (which I admit that I've been out of for many years) that is known as "anticipating funds" - the banks don't like it. You'll probably get away with it at this time of year, but if you make a habit of it, they'll jump on you.
