Personally, I like AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)

And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

having an antivirus provides you only a basic security and correction mechanism. However to make it effective you should use a site advisor service as that of Googles or the mcafee plugin for browsers. Apart from that whenever your computer receives any trojan or other type of virus program, most of the trojan, and worm type of programs are not automatically removed. You have to note down the name of the malware and copy manual removal instructions from respective web site of the antivirus company, then follow the whole procedure step by step, only after that you can say you have removed the malware. Not a single antivirus product whether it be commercial, paid or free is capable of doing it. Therefore it seems there is no difference in using any one product against other. If you are a home user you can try one of the free avs available. If you are more security conscious you can get any of the commercial ones.

Your security depends more on your conscious selection of safe sites/services and less on the software on your computer.

spybot is not a anti-virus program as someone has put (it detects spyware/malware)
anyway norton, or mcafee would be the best pick for protection
