An interesting question.... and a good point to raise.
I get a little fed up with people who forget that cat's for instance are in fact rather unplesant animals sometimes, My cat kills things and plays with them as she does so, I've seed dog's do the same, even seen my pony stamping about trying to kill a rat... It's nature.
As for animaks killed by humans ( children or otherwise).... I didn't read the question involving the 4 yr old, but for sure that's not murder, but if it's done for fun, by anyone who realises they are doing wrong, it is SEVERE cruelty and should be heavily punished.
People need to remember animals are good companions, but when the chips are down, you have to know when to shoot your own dog. In my experience, people who do attribute human emotions to thier animals are sometimes a bit weak in the head, and also, I regularly discover there are similar people who have suffered at the hands of society or parents and found thier only "friends" to be thier pet dog or cat or whatever. They're not stupid, just... Maybe a little confused about things.

Animals are not people certainly. Why would someone hold an animal in similar respect to a human?
Because animals like people are capable of comprehension of actions and have their own ethics. It unfortunately usually only caters to their survival or the survival of their young.
Animals can no way think in advance the way humans do. They do however develop personalities based on their surroundings for survival. So they are personable and intelligent.
However they work within their ethical code of what they deem right or wrong for survival. They will also work within our ethical code have you not seen a dog with it's tail between it's legs. That is shame. Shame only comes from a sense of violating some code or rules. Weather it be dominance or society. We are just smart animals that live in a large pack.
murder is most likely token metaphorically. To take it literally when you understand the context is a bit ridiculous.
Animals kill in moderation. They kill for survival and necessity. When it comes to a pack mentality they need an alpha and beta. The pack's success depends on being efficient they cannot take care of a sick lion. It will slow them all down and they will all die. But, if you bothered to look into it. Animals will take care of the elderly in groups so as long as they can keep up.
Animals are not hitlers. Animals Live in a small group which success depended on eliminating the forces that threaten it. They live in their own ethical code of what is right and wrong for their survival. They also live in a world of dominance and submission.
We as humans just live in a bigger pack that has the ability to take care of the sick and weak in a bigger way. We have an advance comprehension and can exploit our resources just as animals could and sometimes do because of a given circumstance. Survival of the fittest.
I think you should really question what is the difference between people and animals? We live in a society that sets a standard for what is ethically right and wrong. We are dominated and dictated by superiors. We don't save every vegetable, coma, ungrateful being. Because humans can see the stupidity in saving what cannot be saved and deemed unsuccessful. Even we have the limit to make the judgment call to what survives and what doesn't.
We dominate and dictate to our children. Why because children have yet to understand the ethical principles. Why do you not question a leader because that person has knowledge the rest do not. Why do they dominate and dictate because the followers can not understand everything that person knows. Why do you blindly listen to a mentor because you see their success and their finished product.
We kill on momentous levels for survival. We use resources beyond the necessity. Do we all really need to be dressed in gold? Do we need to make slaves of others? Materialism only satisfies our urge to possess things and have control. To be admired by others by it. And when we are no longer satisfied we throw that possession away.
It is because of our advance comprehension we are capable of greater evils than animals. But as humans we know with our power comes responsibility and consequence.
That is why people love animals and treat them as if they were furry little people. Because they resemble us in many ways. Just not us in our entirety.

There are a lot of strange people on this planet and I think that animal lovers are the least of them, I don't agree with the anthropomorphising of the animals but It really is unfair of you to blame them because you have commitment issues. I would be more inclined to have a go at all those religious fanatics whose sole purpose in life is to shove Jesus or the equivalent prophet down every ones throat and expecting people to accept that hearing the voice of god is normal behaviour - maybe for paranoid schizophrenics but not the rest of us, and I wouldn't call them stupid I'd call them effing dangerous dragging us into their holy war - yes Mr's B & B you know who you are so next time you attend a prayer breakfast make a joint decision to get yourselves commited

it may bypass decrease back to a strict Darwin-existence, the position there will be no favorism to particular hairy creatures. some see nature as stunning, and people are corrupting it, yet imagine of ways many canines does not exist as we talk, in the experience that they ought to save employer with wolves? those small yappy canines would very last about an afternoon, or the subsequent meal. So not a win-win for all animals if people went the following day.

Unbalanced, definitly unbalanced. I can see how people love their pets. I loved my dog, but when he got cancer, it was spend 3 grand for an operation that only had 25% chance of success plus meds for the rest of his life, plus constant discomfort, or put him down. I put him down. People that keep suffering pets alive are selfish and cruel. Kids that kill animals, are not necessarily cruel, more curious I think. It's not nice though. Killing animals is not murder. Sometimes it's the best thing. Gaggles of cats, especially stray ones can spread disease faster than rats.

I don't agree with your opinion. I have three cats and three dogs, they all get along and I love them. They bring joy into my life, they don't gossip, spread falsehoods etc. They are wonderful, each pet has its own personality. I am not mental nor stupid and I don't owe anyone an apology that at times my animals seem superior and better company then people.

An animal is not a human being, granted. Howevver, people who do kill animals can not be categorized as compassionate, can they? I mean, the mean of compassion, one of the allegedly human emotions, is lacking in people who abuse animals. Besides, killing or torturing animals is one trait of people with serious personality disorders, including antisocial personality disorder.

There is a special division, Animal Control that will prosecute animal cruelty. My two dogs aren't human, but I do love them, and they give me wet little kisses when I come home from work. That is love from them. We get attached to pets, but calling it murder is something different. They are my companions, but maybe because that girl was so young she got off, I'm not sure. There are a lot of sick people out there and hurting animals is one step closer to hurting humans.

I must say that JMHSI girl is totally LOST if she thinks size determines the importance of a living organism. I'm pretty sure I'm bigger than her too.
Is this the reason why they try to save the whales?
