I suggest that you discuss this with a lawyer before talking to HR. Explain the situation and find out your rights. Document the facts.
IMHO, HR departments often exist to protect companies from liability and to further the agenda of the executive staff. They aren't necessarily there to protect employees.
Hopefully your HR department isn't an evil one, however. After you talk to a lawyer, you'll have a better idea of where you stand and whether talking to HR is a good idea.

Actually you may not have a leg to stand on. If the bank did not get satisfactory he could have said he fired you for poor work performance. If you take action you may cause yourself a bigger problem. However, take note of any additional comments. You may want to have a recorder on hand also.

It sounds like your boss is an ***. Unfortunately I don't think you have anything you can sue for unless there is something else you haven't mentioned.
I previously worked for a similar boss and found the best way to handle it is to leave on your own terms. I continued working for him and spent a lot of time looking. If you have a good resume and interview well you should have no problem finding a better work environment. In my experience this boss was using this scare tactic to keep people on their toes. It worked for a lot of his employees who were in constant fear for there jobs. I don't respond well to that type of leadership so I found another job and quit. Needless to say he was very surprised that someone would actually want to leave because he threatened to fire them.

You can report to HR and do a legal action against him however you can approach him to understand more about his style of working.
In a corporate world, there are a lot of cases, people step down on others to protect his/her position. It's not good to do but we need prepare to avod being a victim.

i would report it to hr and try to get it resolved, but hes the boss and if he wants to make sure the audit goes well maybe he should put his foot in and do the work too. im not sure about filing legal action. he had no right to tell you he would fire you, seems to me if the audit dont pass he should lose his job cause he did nothing to pass the audit

Absolutely, that is what HR is there for. That was very inappropriate of him to single you out and put the entire pressure of the exam on only you when it is the whole department's score.

You can report him and see what they say. Since he is the boss he can fire you for any reason he wants to, even without one.
