A Doula is a birthing coach who helps a laboring woman through pains the best way possible to achieve a natural birth. She provides emotional and physical support to the laboring woman with massage, aromatherapy, helping the woman change positions, etc, to help labor progress as well as possible. The Doula is also used as a go between for the patient to the doctor or midwife, to make sure the woman's wishes are fulfilled best as possible throughout the birthing experience.
After the birth, a Doula helps with the feeding, infant massage, and may also clean the new mother's house for the first few days so that mommy can bond with her new baby.

A Doula is a woman who cares for families in pregnancy, labor, birth and post partum. Doula is a greek word that means "with woman" A couple hires a Doula to be with them during the labor and birth. She does not replace the dad she only adds to the experience. A Doula is usually a mother herself, has a nurturing soul and has taken additonal training in preganncy, labor/birth and postpartum. She usually meets the mom at her home and helps decide if it tis time to go to the hospital, is there during the birth to aid in positions changes, massage and work with the birth plan to help assure the couple has the birth that they deserve. A Doula works FOR YOU and not the doctor or the hospital. I would check out www.doula.com or www.DONA.com. Hope this helps!

The word doula comes from Greek, and refers to a woman who personally serves another woman. In Greece, the word has some negative connotations, denoting "slave" or "servant of God," as some doulas have inadvertently discovered through their international social networks. For this reason, some women performing professional labor support choose to call themselves labor assistants. Women who assist new mothers in breastfeeding and newborn care are now called thus. Thus the term arose initially with reference to the postpartum context after labor and delivery, and is still used in that domain.

A doula is one step below the expertise of a mid-wife. She helps with physical and emotional distress of the mother. She can give you naturapathic care during pregnancy and give you contraction-relieving massages during labor. Doulas are awesome people and I am going to hire one when I get pregnant!
