I've never had a problem with anyone "not respecting my bel[ie]f " as a humanist that I couldn't have clearly seen prior to throwing my humanism on the table in a way that is so infuriating to particular religious people. I am not making any huge compromise not butting in on the details when it comes to subjective meaning, and if I have to obey a few people's eccentricities while the academia puzzles out a suitable campaign to inform the general public, I'm down with observing living mythology.

for the same reason why most wars in this world with the exception of very few, are fought over religion or another groups religious beliefs. because people are scared of things that they don't understand. and when you put into question things people have been thought to believe was true for their whole life, well just look at the entire middle east, no one can get along.

Religious belief is not about respect! It's about conflict over differences, not celebration of them!
Imagine that you, cop, and your partner are defusing a bomb. There is a red wire and a blue wire. Your partner is about to cut the blue wire. You know that if he cuts the blue wire, the bomb will go off, killing or maiming him and injuring several others.
Should you "respect his opinion"?
NO! NONONONONONONO!
When someone is wrong, they are wrong. If it's not going to effect you at all, let them be wrong- but if their wrongness effects say... your government's policy on stem cell research, resulting in slower production of cures for a disease that your grandpa had that may be passed on to your children, or increased crime about 16 years AFTER Roe vs. Wade is overturned, or periodic crusades in the middle east...
you get the idea. RELIGION is not something you can respect. It is perhaps the most important reason to fight! Religious tolerance is an illusion and a VERY costly one at that!
You, atheist, must fight for the right. Cut the red wire. Save future generations from disease. Stop terrorism. Preserve our freedoms.
STOP organized religion.

I am sorry that people do not draw the line between disrespect and merely disagreeing on a topic. The difficult part is that the topic of God and eternity is so very important and people's beliefs are so strong.

There are always going to be some people who can't respect your beliefs no matter what they are. I've seen this happens to Christians, Atheists, everyone.

If you're talking about Christians, this is why: Christians believe that if you dont believe in God and accept him as savior, when you die, you will burn in hell for eternity. It will be pure misery. So, obviously if a Christian is close to you and cares about you then they will want to help you avoid that and the thought of you going to hell is horrible for them. They just want to help you. Give them a break...It's only because they care about you.
