To find the base subtract 18 from 100 to obtain the corect percent.
100 - 18 = 82%
convert 82 % to decimal
remove the % sign. divide 82 by 100
82 / 100 = 0.82
Divide 500 by the decimal
500 / 0.82 = 609.7560976
The answer is: the base is £609.7560976

Greg, what i understand about your question is something like u have received $500.00 only which has been deducted by 18%, and u want to find out the total sum of the money u supposed to receive b4 deduction, right? ok lets do it this way.
500 is only actually 82% (100% - 18%) of the total sum, so to find out the original sum we have to roll back from the bottom way up or something like this:
500 divided by 82% = 609.75
609.75 x 18% deduction = 109.75
Therefore:
609.75 - 109.75 = 500.00
So the original sum of the money u supposedly to receive is 609.75

If your payment has already had 18% deducted from it, that means you're left with (100 - 18)%, or 82%.
All you have to do is calculate 82% of your payment. This is done by going 0.82 times 500.
