I have 6 year old, 3 year old and 7 month old girls and my husband is only home every second weekend. My six and three year olds understand perfectly that when I'm putting baby to sleep it is quiet time. I did not have to scream or punish them, but I did have to stand very firm on the issue with a certain tone to my voice. There's nothing wrong with teaching your 4 year old (she's not too young) that there are boundaries and rules in life. Some suggestion: Tell your daughter that when she was a baby you didn't allow anyone to wake her up so you won't allow anyone to wake up baby either. Don't give her "more love" when she's bad that will confuse her greatly. Have you heard of the advise, reward good behavior? If she is being quiet and respectful give her a non sugary treat like do a puzzle with her or join her for some colouring in. Put the four yo down for sleep before baby. And finally try what I did, read a book to the older child on her bed, or better yet tell a story in dim light, so she'll go to sleep and so will baby while you nurse. This is how I manage to get all three to sleep by 8pm so I can have some "me" time which us mums definitely need.

First, a 4-year-old barely if at all has the capacity to understand the repercussions of her actions, nor do they understand death as an adult or older child might. Calling the child a murderer is kind of silly at that point, as is expecting remorse.

Not that there's no reason for concern. Cruelty to animals by a child can be a sign of serious psychological problems and the child should certainly have some visits with a therapist.

Your love and adoration of animals is admirable, as was your sense of empathy when you were a child. However, reporting your cousin to the police for animal cruelty will go nowhere since nobody's going to prosecute a 4-year-old for that (her mother will claim, rightfully so, that it was an accident and that her 4-year-old did not have capacity to determine right from wrong nor the consequences of her actions), nor will a call to CPS yield anything unless there are definite signs that the 4-year-old is being abused.

There's a difference between thinking it's alright to harm an innocent animal and having to deal with a child who does not know better make a terrible mistake.

At age 4, children have entered the stage in development where they are learning about morality. Also, behavior becomes more intentional. So may have perposely wanted to harm this kitten and it may not have been an accident. But I really do not know. It is not until preschool age, right about now, that your cousin will be fully conscience of what is right and wrong. I think that you should NOT report this to the police for animal cruelty. However, you may want to speak to someone a child psychologist, someone who has seen something like this before to give you a more accurate explanation to this behavior. If there is more to this, then the child should seek help. If not, then it was an accident and the child did not mean any hard. The child may not show any feelings of remorse because the child needs some help.

I think that the child needs professional help. It's just not normal behaviour. I can remember being 4 years old and I've got children, nieces etc and you are right, at this age you should know the basic rights and wrongs. For the child's sake alone I think something should be done. If your cousin doesn't take it seriously then I would report the family to expose the condition.

Thats horrible.

Theres something wrong with that kid. Sounds disturbed and like the previous poster said, children that behave like that will go on to do much worse things. Just about every Serial killer started out torturing animals as a child.

No normal child would do that.

The child should be severely reprimanded for what they did. They might be young but they have to be taught that what they did is very very wrong.

I'd contact Social Services because it sounds like your cousin isn't able to bring her kid up properly. There must be something bad going on in that household to make the child act out in such a horrible way and so out of character for the average 4 year old. I'd get Social Services involved for the kids' welfare.

If the 4yr old really killed the kitten, it is a major sign of her future. Children that kill animals often grow up to be criminals and harm not only animals, but people as well. There is a great deal of research to prove this.

It is extremely important to contact CPS and the Police. Try every option available. Obviously this child is very disturbed, and it needs to be treated now before it is too late.

Good Luck

Wow girl. You are understandably scared and angry, but I think you are over reacting. The four year old is not a murderer. Something is not right in that family that is causing the child to act out in a very bad way, but that does not mean a police investigation is appropriate.
In the real world, the parents of that little girl need counseling along with the kids. The police in America are largely ineffective. It would probably make matters worse if they get in on the problem. If you are motivated by anything but concern for the kid, then you also need to calm down and think straight.

In the UK a child under 10 is supposed to have no criminal intent in mind. That means they are oblivious to the very idea of crime. That is completly wrong. Children from a very early age KNOW the difference between right and wrong. They know that throwing a helpless animal against a wall will kill it. That was why the child tried to hide the crime.
I would report this incident of animal cruelty to the police and so should you. I would also make sure that the child NEVER entered my home again.

Settle down and forget it for now. Punishment means nothing to a 4 year old. She doesn't even know she has done something wrong yet.
Tell her about it when she is about 18 or 19. That will have a far greater effect than any punishment now will. I think you are playing the I'm tough card a bit much when you dribble on with all the rest of the cr*p you say towards the end of your letter. Read Mien Kampf.

You might learn how to be a better person yourself.

Just settle petal
