So go back to where you came from. Don't come here and then have the nerve to complain about it!

It's not that the British are rude (or arrogant as suggested earlier), but we are certainly reserved.
Having worked abroad I can see why some cultures would consider us rather unfriendly. In a lot of European cultures it is expected that you provide a greeting (which may even involve kissing) and small talk before you get down to business.
In America there is a much more effusive approach to life. I was absolutely stunned to be introduced at a meeting and to be greeted by whistles and applause as if it were a football match (it wasn't).
We Brits are friendly. Although we will tend to be friendlier if you catch us on our home turf. Commuting has some very definite rules about ignoring everyone else on the train - and this tends to extend to the city streets.
Get away from the city and out into the suburbs and the country you will find the attitude friendlier and a touch warmer. A smile will generate a smile in response. Patient small talk and a genuine warmth and good nature is almost certainly going to generate warmth and friendliness in return.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I shall retire back into my personal space. We haven't been properly introduced so I really shouldn't have spoken to you...

I see you are called "Patriot", I hope you are not discussing American foreign policy or conservatism in a loud voice because this would account for a lot!!!
Seriously, - especially if you have an embarrassing "southern" accent- you may need to moderate your voulume and tone of voice. For instance, people at the next table should not be able to hear what you are saying..
Other than that, yes you are right, it's the famous British "reserve". Don't worry - it IS a different culture after all. Every time I go to Texas I'm embarrassed by how damn FRIENDLY everybody is!

When you say "conservatism" do you mean reserve, because a lot of us brits have an outward reserve, but are very friendly if you take the time to get to know us! I find if you go out with a friendly vibe yourself, you will detract the moody ones, and attract the friendly ones like a happy magnet!

My money's on you being an American and I'll tell you why we're not friendly. It's because we are sick of the Yanks coming over here, bragging loudly about how everything is bigger and better in the good ol' US of A.
We are also sick of being drawn into your dubious "wars" where the lives of British soldiers are lost.
So excuse us if we don't crack open the Earl Grey quick enough for you, love. Toodle pip.

I think you need to look at how you approach people, i've lived in Birmingham all my life and the people are really nice and friendly. Even since 9/11, (i'm a muslim) although some people give me dirty looks, most people are nice. I always smile when i see anyone in the street, i think thats the best way to get to know people.
We're not that bad, you probably met some posh snobs who don't talk to common people. Don't tar everyone with the same brush, you get good people and bad people, don't give up.

Well do us a favour, go back home, and take all your scrounging relatives with you. We do not need the likes of you here thinking that the British tax payer will be nice to you while paying for all your basic needs, food, houses and then expect us to be nice to you while there is not enough money to fund the NHS to meet the needs of British citizens

I think British people are becoming more unfriendly, rude and arrogant!
It's amazing how many people give you a look when you say excuse me in a supermarket when they are taking up the whole aisle so you can't get past. I am British by the way.
Also, many British people are getting sick of those (both English and foreign) who live off the state making those of us who work hard for a living pay for them too in taxes.
Having said that there are plenty of friendly people out there you just have to meet people in the right situation.
