I just found out today that I have borderline personality disorder. I have been reading about it, but not much is said about treatment. What kind of therapy will I need? I know that BPD is not treatable with medication, unless there is another mood disorder present. Does this mean I really am crazy?

Do you people even know what you are talking about? Get a clue.

Um, yeah. A woman with a Ph.D told me today that I am borderline. I don't go around thinking it's cool to have issues, and it's the disease du jour.

My ex-husband had diagnosed BPD. It was extremely difficult to deal with him because he would not admit that there was anything wrong with him - it was all someone else's fault. No, there are no real drug therapies available, although some anti-depressants can help somewhat in dealing with the depression that usually accompanies BPD.

The only thing that I know of that may work (if the person is truly motivated) is intensive group therapy and/or one-on-one therapy for a very long time. This will help you see that others do not think the way you do in black and white. There are shades of gray and you CAN learn to relate better to others and have successful personal relationships.

You are not crazy! Millions of people have some type of personality disorder. You are lucky that you have found out and have the tools to make your life better. You're on the right track as far as reading as much as you possibly can about the most current treatments, etc.

God bless and Merry Christmas.

No offense, but most people on Y!Answers are idiots. Most just want their 2 points - you're not going to get a medical answer, and if you did you shouldn't trust it.

I would talk to your doctor about treatment. There's probably a mix of therapy and drugs which will minimize the effects of the condition. Talk to people who have undergone treatment - your doctor or the local hospital may be able to help.

I found a couple of websites - they may help you with your search. Good luck, and take some comfort from Yossarian, the main character in "Catch 22". If you think you're crazy, then you're normal. Only the truly insane think they are rational.

You are not crazy, dear, but are merely suffering from a mental imbalance - most possibly caused by overwork, over-strain, or even over-worry. Such BPDs are purely temporary, and wholly curable.
The right medical therapy can reduce BPD, although it cannot totally eliminate it. A total cure can only be brought about by identifying the root-cause for it, and eliminating that cause itself - which is often 'easier said than done' !
Please consult a qualified neurologist, showing all the records about your 'disorder' - and he/she will be able to prescribe a suitable set of medicines for your specific needs.

Hello,
It is very good that you know this about yourself. Whoever answered that dialectical personality therapy can be used to treat this is absolutely correct. A physician will not be able to do much to help, but a good therapist may. Not to worry, you aren't crazy;)

There are therapists who specialize in working with individuals with personality disorders. These things are more common than you may believe. The best thing to do is to be proactive.

Good luck!

How exactly do you know that you have borderline personality disorder? Have you bee diagnosed with it or are you just guessing? Because if you're just guessing then I think it's unlikely that you actually have it.

You're not crazy, don't worry about it. But if you are worried, then the therapy you will need can be lots of things. Psychotherapy is one of them, and probably the most effective one.

Good luck, and don't worry about this too much. :)
