Keep the helmet as a souvenir of the days it kept you alive but retire it and get a new one that can better protect you in case of injury.
Good luck

The helmet should be retired after three years with normal use and no serious falls. Most manufacturers recommend that after a serious fall or hard impact to the helmet (say a tree branch), the helmet should be replaced because it can develop weak spots that will provide inadqueate protection.
Fortunately good riding helmets that meet all of the current safety specifications are available for under $50 and will have the advantage of the newest and lightest designs. Mine is about due to be replaced, and this is one thing that it's not a good idea to take chances on.

I have my helmet for about 9 years now, maybe going on 10. Somewhere around there.
Replace helmet when all beat'n up, has any cracks or any areas that is warn down.
Some people replace after a few years, especially if constant use, no matter if took a fall or not. Others like myself, keep it as I rarely use it (only in English or when I had to during shows that mandatoried it).
However, safety matters most.
When you doubt your equipment abilities, that is a clear sign to look into investing in something that you trust in.

The therapy program I work with is required, due to new regulations from both the NARHA office and the melmet manufacuters, to change helmets out every four years regardless of use or "injury". As you know, you should also change it if you hit your head on the ground when falling. If I were you I would replace your helmet :)

I would replace it after every fall. Unless you have it X-rayed, how can you tell if it has any cracks under the outter coating with out destroying it? It is along the same lines as a baby's carseat: you replace it after any accident it has been in regardless of any visible damage. You never know when it will fail you after the first accident. If it has never taken a fall with you, then replace it every 3-4 years or when it is no longer comfortable or fits properly.

I was always taught that you replace your helmet every 3 years because of warranty and wearing out.

My helmet is pretty worn out from years of abuse.
Wish I could go out and buy a new one some time. Lucky you.
