never would I take away that option from them.
I'd want them to fantasize about what they want to be and then live that fantasy later on in life.
that would be selfish if I did.

No. I can understand the sentiment that parents want the best for their children. But the harsh truth is that we cannot control or make choices for other people. If you take away the abililty to choose, all you are doing is making your child dependent on you. S/he will never learn to stand on their own feet. At best, a parent can teach a child to be a good person and how to evaluate the choices that arise in their lives in a moral and ethical way. But they cannot decide for their children.
