I am moving to San Diego for a new job next month and my primary office location is in downtown San Diego, however, I will be required to drive to Irvine 2 (or 3 times - in a pinch) per week, also.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the most ideal areas to live in which I will not require air conditioning during the summer (due to a medical condition of one of my family members)?

the best area to live in SD is in a high rise in the heart of downtown, if you can afford it. A nice 2 bedroom condo will probably run in the low 1 million range. You definately won't need AC there. Everywhere in the east is no fun, and it gets really hot during the summers, so you would need an AC. The only cheap places by the beach are Oceanside, Pacific Beach, and Ocean Beach. Oside is far from downtown though, PB is a party town, and OB is closest cheap beach town to downtown but can be a bit ghetto at times. If you don't mind living around mostly gays, Hillcrest is a nice and safe area real close to downtown as well, but its not that cheap either.

I suggest La Jolla and Carlsbad, especially since you have to travel to my home town twice a week.

If you're looking to rent or buy in San Diego, I can have my San Diego real estate agent contact you and help you find a place. I also have an agent who works in Irvine and Orange County, on the off chance you want to move here.

Regards
