both yourself and the sender should complain to the courier, the sender should have some proof of postage with a reference number.

Although it is damned inconvenient, don't assume it is lost forever. At this time of year, the sheer volume of stuff means that 'lost' may just mean packed in a van somewhere and it will turn up later. Whoever sent it to you should have insurance and be making the claim for loss/compensation. If it's goods that you have paid for then you need a refund from the seller. If you paid by credit card, the card company may pay you. If the present is for an adult, then an IOU may be in order, otherwise it's time to bash the plastic and get a replacement!

Write a complaint to the Couriers Customer Services Dept. If you can prove it was posted so much the better. Even better if you can prove what was in it and you will receive compensation.
If you can't prove any of the above you can still claim.

Complain to their Customer Care department & the sender will get some of the value of the parcel back, although not all of it unless it was insured.

Hope the rest of Christmas is luckier for you !
