In Europe, only the British and the Irish drive on the left. In all other European countries, drivers stay on the right. I'm not sure why it is the way it is.

so the french decided they were going to drive on the right
no us state had a law yet.
the province of quebec was the first to pass a law what side of the road to drive on. and they followed the french custom of driving on the right. when the other states and provinces began to realize they needed to organize traffic, they all followed quebec to keep all traffic moving on the right. just for simplicity.

Only a few countries in the world drive on the right...The rest are on the left....It was a choice of theirs (USA) , no real reason!
