I think it can be easier to be gay, in a general sense. I guess it is really down to how you portray yourself and your sexuality. I know that i was brought up in a very conservative background where being gay just wasn't even mentioned let alone allowed to be a possibility. However I still developed to be the person I am and have no problems making my life seem no less ordinary than anyone else. I don't expect any special attention or make a huge 'song and dance' about being 'gay' if someone asks me a question I'll give an honest answer, but I won't go around (for want of a better phrase) thrusting my sexuality down people's throats! Therefore I have had very few, if any problems with homophobia.
However I have travelled to quite a few different countries and I find some of the most frightening bigotry and oppression has come from western countries. There are still parts of the States in which people honestly believ if you show signs of being gay they will either take you to a psychiatrist as they believe you to be mentally ill or they will beat 'the gayness' out of you. It is appalling that so called civilised people can think that is an acceptable way to carry on.

So the short answer to the question is in the environment I have come to live in it has been alot easier to be 'gay' and be proud of it. However don't be under any illusions that this is the case everywhere!

Where I live it isn't an issue for decades now.People in general do mind their own business.
But that's mainly because I live in a very liberated country, where things as discrimination of any kind are against the law:the questions asked here by Doris ,Lulu and *********** are forbidden. They would face huge finds and hundreds of hours of community service. And Yahoo would be shut down too, because they let them the opportunity to open new accounts on a daily bases.Maybe in big cities you are "accepted",but as I see the no of bigots on this section growing by the day:I would say no.You are a long way away from being accepted.
I am really sorry for you:the bashing here should stop.
Greetings:Rob.
Hoping for a better future for all of you.

Homosexuality is becoming more tolerated "these days", but it's far from accepted. As you can see from a few answerers before me, it will be a long way before being gay is accepted by the general population.

There are still people out there who think homosexuality is a deviant sin, and a complete option. Until those things are washed away more, it will never be widely accepted.

More so then in the past, but still have a long way to go....there are still too many who are unwilling to accept that they are just people too. I accept them totally, have many friends and feel for them for having to defend themselves constantly, because of ignorance....no they don't choose to be gay, they are born that way.....

Probably kind of like blacks a couple of decades back. Tolerated yes, even amusing in certain circuses, but hardly accepted.

But it's hard to say - people of each younger generation are more accepting than those of the older.

Accepted? Not really... Not with all those eyebrow raising that can still be seen.

Tolerated? Maybe... A lot of people try to be civil. Barbarians are no longer applauded.

It's more like they're getting used to it even if they don't really agree with it.

No. A preference of sex, only one aspect of 10000's of a person, has created a hostile environment for people who contribute to our community, just as all do. Most people would say that they are "O.K. with gays", but when the option is presented to them, the straight guy gets the job, the last seat on the taxi, and the acceptance from society.

Not fully, but there is some progress and changing of closed minds to accept gays more

That depends on the circles you travel, in the more enlightened areas yes it's no problem. Among the throwbacks it tends to still be an issue but not as much as it once was.
