My husband and I are going to Oklahoma for Christmas, and we are planning on renting a car. The only problem is, it looks like all the rental places we've looked at require a major CREDIT card in order to rent the car. We only have a debit card. I do have a credit card, but it is maxed out. Do they actually swipe the credit card when you rent the car, or do they just write down the information on the contract? I figure if they just write it down, we can get by with using that maxed out card since they say they will let us pay for the rental (when we return the car) with our debit card (which is what we were wanting to use instead of a major credit card but can't do according to the website). Can anyone provide any info from personal experience?

+ I use Enterprise and they swipe and write. You Can pay cash instead of a credit card. Also you can try renting a car fro one day before you need one and get a history with them and then try the debit. My Debit says visa and they let you do it. Bring a copy of your car insurance/registration so they don't charge you so much in extra insurance.
Good Luck

They do actually swipe the credit card. Enterprise does actually take debit cards too. Just be warned that they will take a $250 deposit immediately, so if you are tight because of the holidays that may effect your choice. All rental car companys take the deposit between $200-$300. Some even check your credit on top of that.

I rent cars often and normally don't like using my credit card and Enterprise is one of the most customer friendly places I have been to, Avis is decent too.

I personally rent in Ok (Lawton/Ft. Sill, OK City) all the time. Avis is a little cheaper than Enterprise, but you have a good chance of getting a free upgrade with Enterprise.

Happy Holidays

Yes, they will run the credit card. They charge the card for the rental fees. They require the card in case you are late returning the car, damage it, etc.
I did hear that Dollar rent a car will take debit cards. But I cannot say for sure.

I don´t know about the credit card issues, but the only time I rented from Enterprise, I got a letter several months later, telling me that we had return the car with some damage on the exterior and they required a payment or they would procede legally against me.. of course I was mad because the car was in perfect condition and if it was damaged they should have told me right at the agency where I returned it.. My lawyer wrote them back and we never heard from them again.
I will never rent from them.

Whenever I have rented from Enterprise, I have been allowed to use my debit card. BUdget Rental also allows usign a debit card and they don't take as much of a deposit as Enterprise and Hertz

Their customer policy won't let it rent to you without the credit card. They charge the card of your choice or take other forms of payment however. Silly, I know. There are a lot of responsible people who don't have credit cards. But then again...
