The Chinese burn paper models of expensive things like Mercedes Benz cars, houses, etc, as well as special paper money called "hell bank notes", at the Hungry Ghost festival, and also at funerals i think. The object is not to demonstrate their wealth, but to send these things to their ancestors as burnt offerings, so that the dead can use them in the after life. See:

Indian's of all hue burn fireworks to celebrate Divali - the festival of lights.
