if converting is the goal, i think they would be a lot more successful if they weren't so repetitive. it's like you're listening to the same song over and over.

Usually not.

Remember the Christian recording industry is exactly that- a recording industry. They dictate what get released by the bands, just like any other record company. If it is not Christian enough for their perceived audience, it is not released. (This is true for any style of music, however.)

I seem to remember that a number of years ago a band called "six pence none the richer" on account of this issue "went secular", that is they joined a secular label. They were smeared as a "sell-out" by some people. Their big song after that was "kiss me" a cute romantic song.

I seem to remember that Steven Curtis Chapmen release an album of love songs for his wife, but he is very big in the Christian music world, so he can do that.

Well. I really don't know that much about it. But they can be romantic too. The band Srtryper has a song called "Lady" I'm sure it has nothing to do with God and also "Honestly" it can be about friendship, but it can also be a prayer.

sometimes the songs are about encouraging believers in their faith; sometimes it's about love (Amy Grant is well known for her love songs in fact)

There are many facets to God, His Love, a relationship with Him. To be a Christian means to have a relationship with Him and to glorify Him. Christians want to hear music that will encourage their faith and that glorifies Him.

The Bible commands us: “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23). Jesus also tells us: “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him” (Matt. 12:34-35). For young adults, music plays a huge role in whether or not our hearts are filled with good or evil.

There are lots and lots of genres too... If you take time to listen it's not boring. If you want to know what Christian artists sound like mainstream artists there's a few good websites: http://www.blessings.com/soundslike.html

If you would like to do your own search, I recommend using Google and typing in “Christian music comparison chart.” Happy listening!

Christian rock bands / gospel bands dont generally sing other songs. Gospel is a genre and they dont deviate from it.

I have heard them do patriotic songs. Songs that talk about the love of their family, friends, spouse. I have even heard a few fun songs.
