Depends, what kind of a parent are you? Will you have time to play it with him and remind him that its just a game?
Basically its a game that lets you start out as a small hood. Then to get money you have to beat up the old people and get their pension money.
Then you move up to a mid level hood and so on. As you go up the level you steal cars and bikes etc. and mule for the mob. In the middle of this cops go after you. and you can shoot back at them and kill them. Like wise your character can get busted or die.
There is punching, shooting and a bit of blood does flow out.
Sure its a game about life in the city why not. But you do have to guide your child. Because that isn't "the real" life everywhere.
I have seen how the children react to the game. They do vary. Some are ok about it others actually get violent and feel invisible after playing the game especially when they have downloaded the cheats.
I operate a PC Game Room and we do have network gaming.
My son is 11 he has played it a few times under my supervision and I'm always ready for the questions he has for me. Its tiring.
I stopped him from playing.

Absolutely! I understand the concern with the horrible amount of violence and the other things that need not be mentioned that've happened in schools this last decade or so, but no matter what people want to say, video games did not make these kids do these things.
Here's a way to look at it, there are literally hundreds of thousands of adolescents that enjoy these games, and go on to do beautiful things. I myself am no exception to this, and am always caring, compassionate, always trying to help, and motivated to further myself in my life, and I sure loved the Grand Theft Auto games.
The harsh truth is that the parents and the children are the ones that caused these problems. If you have raised a son that you're proud of, who you think has good judgement, and is mentally stable, then you've got nothing to worry about. If you think that you have NOT raised that son, things have got to be looked at and worked on, and a video game is the last of your worries.
I've heard many arguements against video games in general too, and kids not wanting to do anything besides them, and all that jive, but I put it to you this way. If he's doing what he needs to be, and his hobby is one that increases ability to focus, concentrate, apply himself to the completion of something, and GREATLY improve hand-eye cordination, well . . . Sure beats the heck out of watching TV doesn't it?
I sure hope this helps, and I do hope that you don't let your son suffer for the poor decisions of other parents around the US.

It just depends on what you think is appropriate for his age. There's a lot of violence in the game, but if you think he's mature enough to understand that it's not real and that it's just a game, then it's up to you.
Sometimes I think people tend to blow the game out of proportion. I don't find it much worse than an action movie or some cable TV shows, but it's your call.
Maybe you could do some online research and look at some screen shots of the game and then make your decision based on what you see.

ok first thing u should know is, grand theft auto games are VERY violent, they contain violence, sexual references and ALOT of coarse language. Wiht the coarse language, being fourteen he would have already been exposed to alot of that by now through school etc. Sexual references shouldn't be much of a problem as long as he is properly educated, and with the violence it just depends on what effect will have on him. As long as he knows it is just a game and that sort of thing is not acceptable in the real world then let him go ahead. Otherwise it is very inappropriate.

definately, a game like grandtheft auto will have no bearing on a 14 year olds behaviour. I was playing that when i was 12 and i havent exhibited any violence from playing a game.

honestly, i am 14 myself. everyone thought that game was really cool because of the violence/hookers/sex references/drug referencs. but, it's actually really lame. it gets old/repetitive, and if your son isn't a very mature 14 year old then it can effect his every day behavior (gonna be a shrink, what can i say). honestly, it's not that great of a choice, I'd wait until around 16, cause i have it now, and it really makes you think about people really getting treated like in the game. so, my answer is no

Do you trust your son to watch 'R' rated movies on his own? If you think he's mature enough to treat the game as a game, and not as something to emulate, then yes, buy him the game. If you're not sure, or don't think he's mature enough, then I recommend against it.

NO.
ABSOLUTELY NOT!
That is the worst game on the market. Kids just don't understand that they can't go out in the real world and do that. It teaches the wrong things. Trust me. My moms friends son is 8, he has the 3rd one, and he manged to steal a car, drive it around a block, hit a tree, and then park it. He had never played any other car games, nor had he ever learned to drive one before.

Yes, i am 15 and the Grand theft auto games are the best series out there.
The best game is the newest one, San andreas.
Please dont listen to the news reporters saying these games influence violence.. think about it. Would you rather have your son shooting and stealing cars in the real world, or in a videogame.. these types of games are also great for stress release.
